Formula North in Transition to Formula SAE® North

Formula SAE is currently in the process of acquiring the Formula program previously run by Formula North Inc. Founded in 2010, the not-for-profit successfully ran the Formula North competition in Ontario, Canada.

The process of changing over leadership and management of Formula North began in May of 2018 when Formula SAE Program Manager Kaley Zundel was contacted by Formula North about the possibility of transitioning the program into SAE. “Logistically, it made sense to incorporate Formula North because of the similarity to Formula SAE and it strategically provides another venue where teams are already participating in electric class”, stated Zundel. “It has taken some time to work out the transitional logistics and participants may not see many changes to the 2019 competition.”

The program will launch under new branding as Formula SAE® North and will host both Internal Combustion (IC) and Electric Vehicle (EV) classes. The 2019 competition dates have not changed and will remain operating the same week of May 30 – June 2, 2019. Registration will open on Wednesday, October 24th at 10:00 AM EDT. Registration will be limited to 45 available spots and registration fees will be $1800.00 USD. Like other Formula SAE Competitions, registration will be limited for one week to teams who are not already registered for Formula SAE Michigan, Formula SAE Lincoln or Formula SAE Electric. The one-week restriction will be lifted on Wednesday, October 31st at 10:00 AM EDT.

The organizing team at Formula North is very excited about the transition to SAE. In conversation with the operating board members, Cathy D’Souza, Nicholas Burgwin, Michael Bakaic and Lauren Patrick, each have expressed that since 2010, it has been their vision to provide university students with an experience of Formula Student in Canada. “We have seen this vision grow over the past 8 years into a thriving showcase of Canadian and International talent”, stated Cathy D’Souza. “As we move forward, the future of the Formula North competition lies in transitioning under SAE International. This move will champion the expansion of the event to serve more student teams with increased resources and standardized efficiency. Post-transition, we will continue to support the event. The Formula North series has been a successful project and we have been honored to have executed it. We will forever be grateful to our student teams, sponsors, donors, volunteers and our families for their unconditional support through the years, in the realization of the Formula North competition."

SAE’s management of Formula SAE North will give participants an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and engineering skills to an expanded roster of teams from other areas as well as increased exposure to potential team sponsors and future employers. Formula SAE North joins the official Formula SAE Series managed by SAE International.
