In 2017, we listened to your 2016 feedback and expanded the Friday dynamic events to operate almost all day in 2017.
In 2018, our dynamic event captains reviewed the results of the 2017 events and decided to operate the Friday dynamic events in a similar fashion for 2018. There is a slight staggering in the start times with events opening either 10:00 AM or 10:30 AM but all events will close at 5:00 PM.
During the planning session for the 2018 dynamic events there was also discussion about lengthening the endurance course. Our event captains and scoring officials worked together to gather data which showed a "perfect storm"; good weather, no shutdowns for accidents or oil leaks and increased vehicle completion of event resulted in us operating the endurance event at max capacity. For the 2018, we need to ensure we have some time built in to allow for buffering of red flags or weather. We will be running the endurance course the entire length of the back oval in 2018.
What does this mean for the competition? Several changes are required.
Probably the biggest change for teams will be the availability to leave the competition site on Saturday during Endurance. Because we will be running the endurance event the entire length of the back oval at this time we will NOT be allowing teams to leave via Gate 12 with their Formula SAE Vehicle Transports/Trailers until the conclusion of the endurance event. We are working with MIS to have another gate opened which would allow removal of trailers but during restricted hours. We encourage teams who know they will not be participating in Endurance to remove their trailers on Friday evening and use their commuter cars to attend the competition on Saturday
Practice track will be relocated on Saturday only. Maps will be provided to show its new location which is north of where Acceleration operates. Bonus for teams is on Saturday teams practicing will be closer to fuel.
The on-track photography area which existed at the location of Gate 12 (near practice) will be removed. There will be no on-track photography by anyone other than professional media and hired SAE Photographers. SAE will be making all captured photographs available for teams.
