What is bigger than MTV starting its broadcasting in the United States in 1981? Formula SAE of course?
The idea for this asphalt racing competition called Formula SAE (coined by Dr Ron Matthews of University of Texas Austin) was pitched to Robert Sechler, SAE International Collegiate Design Series Manager in 1980. Excited about the opportunity of providing a competition to students which encouraged engine modifications, SAE moved forward with supporting the first competition in 1981. Formula SAE became the third Collegiate Design Series program SAE had to offer student engineers; only be to preceded by Baja SAE (formerly Mini Baja) and SAE Supermileage.
During our 2020 competition season, SAE International will be celebrating Formula SAE turning 40! We look forward to sharing in our celebration with you at the Formula SAE Michigan competition in May. And we are currently looking for those “blast from the past” photos and stories. We encourage you or your university to share in our monumental occasion by sending any photos and stories to email@example.com.
As we continue our planning for this celebration over the course of the next 40 weeks what for more information and Formula SAE facts on our Facebook channel.
