Since 2023, longtime Formula SAE, Formula Student, and Formula Hybrid volunteer Michael Royce has continued a meaningful tradition in memory of his wife, Suzanne, also a longtime volunteer, by donating copies of Learn & Compete – A Primer for FSAE, Formula Student and Formula Hybrid Teams at Formula SAE and Formula Student competitions around the world.
The book, written pro bono by Michael and Suzanne Royce along with a team of experienced Formula SAE and Formula Student judges, was created to help student teams navigate the challenges of designing, building, testing, and competing in Formula Series competitions.
The first edition, released in 2012, quickly sold out and became a valued resource for teams. A greatly expanded second edition was launched in 2022, growing from 26 chapters and 255 pages in a single volume to 43 chapters and 473 pages across two volumes. Volume 1 focuses on Team Organization and Design, while Volume 2 covers Build, Test & Development and Competition Readiness.
At the 2026 Formula SAE Electric competition, Michael selected five teams to receive complimentary copies of the book, recognizing the value the resource can provide as they continue to develop their programs:
Team 40 – Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières
Team 59 – California Institute of Technology
Team 63 – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
Team 76 – Saint Louis University
Team 83 – Santa Clara University
SAE International thanks Michael Royce for his continued support of student teams and for sharing the knowledge and experience accumulated by generations of volunteers, judges, and competitors.
